The following graphs depict the aggregate results of PDPH's respiratory virus surveillance. Care should be taken with the interpretation of these results.

These summaries display the provisional, year-to-date counts (or, in some cases, percentage positivity) of respiratory viruses by week of report. Comparable data for preceding years are shown as well.

All surveillance data are preliminary and are not intended for further distribution.

Week 52

For week 52 of 2023, RSV counts have slightly increased from the week prior but were lower than the peak for the season in early to mid-December. Adenovirus and human metapneumovirus have increased slightly in detections. Parainfluenza virus type 3 has maintained similar counts. Parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2 and rhinovirus have decreased in detections.

Week 50

For week 50 of 2023, RSV activity once again decreased, which may indicate that the seasonal peak has passed. Adenovirus, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1 and rhinovirus/enterovirus have all increased in detections. Parainfluenza type 3 has maintained similar counts since the previous week, while parainfluenza virus type 2 has decreased in detections.

Week 49

For week 49 of 2023, RSV activity remained somewhat level, which may indicate that the seasonal peak has been reached. Rhinovirus/enterovirus activity continues to decline. Adenovirus and parainfluenza virus type 2 have slightly increased in detections. Parainfluenza virus type 3 and human metapneumovirus have maintained similar detections since the previous week.

Week 48

For week 48 of 2023, RSV detections continued to increase although positivity was somewhat level. Adenovirus detections increased slightly while human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3 and rhinovirus have maintained similar detections since last week.

Week 47

For week 47, RSV detections continued to increase, while rhinovirus/enterovirus activity continued to decline. Activity for other viruses remained low.

Week 46

For week 46 of 2023, RSV detections have continued to sharply increase. Although rhinovirus/enterovirus activity has declined in recent weeks, activity remains substantial. Parainfluenza virus type 3 detections were stable compared to the previous week. Human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2 have had decreased activity, while adenovirus increased in detections.

Week 45

For week 45 of 2023, RSV detections have continued to sharply increase. However, rhinovirus was the predominant virus detected in week 45, with 20.2% of tested specimens positive for rhinovirus. Rhinovirus activity increased in the past week, though overall activity is trending downward. Adenovirus and parainfluenza virus type 3 detections were stable compared to the previous week. Human metapneumovirus and parainfluenza virus type 1 detections increased while parainfluenza type 2 detections decreased.

Week 44

For week 44 of 2023, RSV counts have increased, which may indicate the start of the season and continued increases over the next several weeks. Adenovirus and parainfluenza virus type 2 detections have increased slightly. Human metapneumovirus has maintained similar counts from the previous week. Parainfluenza virus type 3, parainfluenza virus type 1, and rhinovirus have all decreased in detections.

Week 42

For week 42 of 2023, RSV counts have increased, which may indicate the start of the season and continued increases over the next several weeks. Adenovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3, and human metapneumovirus all maintained similar counts from the previous week. Rhinovirus/Enterovirus detections have decreased slightly.

Week 41

For week 41 of 2023, RSV counts have slightly increased. Adenovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3, and human metapneumovirus all maintained similar counts from the previous week. Rhinovirus/Enterovirus detections have increased slightly.

Week 40

For week 40 of 2023, RSV and parainfluenza virus type 1 have slightly increased in detections. Parainfluenza virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3, adenovirus, human metapneumovirus and rhinovirus have all maintained similar detections from the previous week.

Week 39

For week 39 of 2023, adenovirus and rhinovirus have increased detections. Human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3 and RSV have maintained similar counts.

Week 38

For the month of September, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2, adenovirus and RSV have all maintained similar counts. Parainfluenza virus type 3 has decreased in counts, while rhinovirus has increased in detections.

Week 35

For the month of August, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1, rhinovirus and RSV have all maintained similar counts. Parainfluenza virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3 and adenovirus have all decreased in detections.

Week 31

For the month of July, parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3 and RSV have all maintained similar counts. Adenovirus has decreased in counts throughout the month while human metapneumovirus had little to no detections.

Week 26

For the month of June, RSV counts increased in the first few weeks and have recently decreased in detections. Human metapneumo virus and parainfluenza virus type 1 have maintained similar counts. Rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus type 2 and adenovirus have all decreased in counts throughout the month.

Week 21

For week 21 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 2 has increased in detections. RSV, parainfluenza virus type 1 and human metapneumovirus have maintained similar counts since last week. Parainfluenza virus type 3, rhinovirus and adenovirus have decreased in counts.

Week 20

For week 20 of 2023, rhinovirus and parainfluenza virus type 2 have increased in detections. RSV and parainfluenza virus type 1 have maintained similar counts to last week. Adenovirus, human metapneumovirus and parainfluenza virus type 3 have decreased in detections.

Week 19

For week 19 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 3 has reached the highest counts so far this season. Rhinovirus and adenovirus have increased in detections while parainfluenza virus type 1 has increased slightly this past week. RSV and human metapneumovirus have maintained similar counts. Parainfluenza virus type 2 has decreased in counts.

Week 18

For week 18 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 3 has reached the highest counts so far this season. RSV, parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2 and human metapneumo virus have all decreased in detections. Adenovirus counts slightly decreased this past week, while rhinovirus increased in detections.

Week 17

For week 17 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 2 and rhinovirus have increased in detections. Parainfluenza virus type 1 has maintained similar counts while adenovirus has decreased slightly in detections. Human metapneumo virus, parainfluenza virus type 3 and RSV have all decreased in counts since the previous week.

Week 16

For week 16 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 3 has reached the highest counts so far this season. Human metapneumo virus and adenovirus have also increased in detections. RSV has increased in counts from last week but is still trending down since the beginning of the season. Parainfluenza type one and parainfluenza type two have maintained similar counts, while rhinovirus has decreased in detections.

Week 15

For week 15 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 3 detections have reached a high for this season. Parainfluenza virus type 2 and parainfluenza virus type 1 have maintained similar counts to last week. RSV, adenovirus, human metapneumovirus and rhinovirus have all decreased in detections.

Week 14

For week 14 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 3 has reached the highest counts so far this season. Rhinovirus has also increased in detections. Parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2, human metapneumovirus and adenovirus have decreased in counts. RSV activity is low and has maintained similar counts from last week.

Week 13

For week 13 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 2 has increased in detections. Parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 3 and adenovirus have maintained similar counts since last week. Human metapneumo virus, rhinovirus and RSV have decreased in counts.

Week 12

For week 12 of 2023, Parainfluenza virus type 3 has reached the highest number of detections so far this season. Rhinovirus and parainfluenza virus type 2 have increased counts this week. RSV, parainfluenza virus type 1, adenovirus and human metapneumovirus have all decreased in detections.

Week 11

For week 11 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 3, adenovirus and human metapneumovirus have reached the highest counts of this season. Parainfluenza virus type 1 has slightly increased in detections, while rhinovirus has remained stable. RSV and parainfluenza virus type 2 counts have decreased.

Week 9

For week 9 of 2023, parainfluenza virus type 3 detections have reached a high for this season. Human metapneumovirus has decreased in detections, though detections remain higher than those observed in previous years. Adenovirus activity increased and is circulating at higher levels than previous seasons for this time of year. Parainfluenza type 1, parainfluenza type 2, rhinovirus and RSV have decreased in counts.

Week 8

For week 8 of 2023, human metapneumovirus and rhinovirus detections are trending downward from last week, while still maintaining high counts for the season. RSV, parainfluenza virus type two and adenovirus have all decreased in detections. Parainfluenza virus type one and parainfluenza virus type three have increased in counts since last week.

Week 7

For week 7 of 2023, human metapneumovirus and adenovirus detections have reached the highest counts in the past four seasons. Parainfluenza virus type one, parainfluenza virus type three, rhinovirus and RSV activity has decreased in the past week. Parainfluenza virus type 2 has slightly increased in detections.

Week 6

For week 6 of 2023, human metapneumovirus detections have reached the highest counts in the past four seasons. Adenovirus counts have decreased since last week but still maintain high levels of detections. Parainfluenza virus type one and rhinovirus counts have increased. Parainfluenza type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3 and RSV have decreased in detections.

Week 5

For week 5 of 2023, adenovirus and human metapneumovirus virus have reached the highest detections so far this season. RSV activity has decreased, while parainfluenza virus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2, parainfluenza virus type 3 and rhinovirus all had slight increases in detections this past week.

Week 4

For week 4 of 2023, all non-influenza respiratory virus activity decreased. While adenovirus and human metapneumovirus virus activity decreased, detections are still among the highest this season so far. Parainfluenza type 1, parainfluenza type 2, parainfluenza type 3, rhinovirus and RSV all had slight decreases in activity this past week.

Week 3

For week 3 of 2023, all non-influenza respiratory virus activity has increased. Adenovirus and human metapneumovirus detections have increased, reaching the highest counts of this season so far. RSV, rhinovirus, parainfluenza type 1, parainfluenza virus type 2 and parainfluenza virus type 3 have all slightly increased in detections from the previous week.

Week 2

For week 2 of 2023, Parainfluenza virus type 3 was the only non-influenza respiratory virus that had increased in detections. RSV, parainfluenza virus type 1, human metapneumovirus, and adenovirus all decreased in activity from the previous week. Rhinovirus and parainfluenza virus type 2 detections remained the same.

Week 1

For week 1 of 2023, Human metapneumovirus activity increased substantially, reaching similar counts to this time last year. Rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus type 1 and RSV saw increases in detections. Parainfluenza type 2, parainfluenza type 3 and adenovirus have decreased in activity from the previous week.
