The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) Division of Disease Control conducts annual data analysis of vaccination coverage using vaccination surveillance data collected in PhilaVax: Philadelphia's Immunization Information System.
PhilaVax is a confidential, population-based, computerized, web-based system that collects and consolidates immunization information for anyone receiving vaccine from Philadelphia health care providers. Begun in 1991 with mandatory reporting of all vaccinations administered to children age 6 years and younger, PhilaVax reporting was expanded in 2006 to include children 7 to 18 years of age, and again in 2009 to include adults 19 years and older.
While PhilaVax is now a lifespan immunization registry of Philadelphia residents, the phased-in reporting of adolescent children and adults, coupled with gaps in provider reporting of vaccination, may result in under-representation of vaccine coverage levels, depending on age and type of vaccine.
